For their engagement session, Sharon wanted to come home to New Orleans from L.A. for some creative and unique images of her and her fiance, Elliott. If you’ve ever been to the French Quarter during Festival Season, you know that it is 1: HOT and 2: full of people. Sharon messaged me that she *really* wanted part of their session in the French Quarter. I immediately got to thinking about how I could make this easy and fun. Instead of a tourist filled, lack-of-parking, logistical nightmare.
Here are 5 tips I came up with to make your French Quarter engagement session fun, relaxed, and easy.
1. Shoot At Sunrise
I can see the look on your face right now. Is she insane? Sunrise???
That’s pretty much what Sharon thought when I asked her if she and Elliott would be willing to get up early for a session. I know it’s early and you’re tired. You feel like you’re going to look like a hot mess. The truth is that if you’re dreaming of a romantic French Quarter engagement photos sans stress and tourists- this is the best option. You’re going to need to be outta there by 9am.
Early times means less people, less traffic, more parking, and more options for good shooting locations. You also get to take advantage of the beautiful morning light which is a good enough reason all by itself!
2. Keep Things Comfortable
If you’re planning to wear those sexy heels, you might want to consider how much walking we’ll be doing. If you think your feet will start to ache, it’s probably a good idea to bring a pair of shoes to wear while we’re changing locations. It’s also best to avoid trying to lug around heavy bags and lots of clothing. If you have many outfit changes I always recommend bringing a friend! They can help you carry your things around. It’s fun to bring a friend along and so helpful when in a busy place like the French Quarter.
3. What Time Of The Year Is It?
The time of the year you plan your engagement session for is important. I’m sure you wouldn’t want to see beads of sweat rolling down your face or having the crazy Louisiana humidity attack your hair. You know what’s best for you. But, if you know your hair is gonna turn into a poof ball as soon as you step out of the door, I suggest scheduling your shoot during the cooler months.
4. Check The Events Calendar
There’s always something bound to pop up in the French Quarter, but there are a few big events during the year that you will 100% want to avoid. Mardi Gras, French Quarter Fest, and Jazz Fest (just to name a few) bring so many people into the city. It can make it very difficult to photograph in the narrow streets of the French Quarter.
5. Have Your Photographer Help You Map Out Locations
Have a game plan for your engagement session! This will help to avoid any miscommunications. If you’re not sure of where a location is or where a good spot to park is, do a little research on Google Maps! You can always ask your photographer for suggestions!
