Carlsbad New Mexico Engagement Session | Mesha & Dewayne

Dewayne and Mesha are from Louisiana and have been living in Carlsbad, New Mexico for almost 2 years. In the spring of 2019, they got engaged here in New Mexico, & they thought it would be fun to commemorate their time here with a photo session with us before moving back to Louisiana.

So one afternoon, we jumped in the truck and headed out into the desert. The backcountry at sunset is a beautiful place to capture your engagement photos in Carlsbad, NM. I always do some location scouting before bringing a couple anywhere – especially into the middle of nowhere – so I knew this location would be stunning as a backdrop for their engagement photo session. The way the sun hits the mountains creates this hazy glow that’s just incredible.

Dewayne was a little nervous before we started taking photos, which is completely normal for so many people. Being in front of a camera is not your normal and I totally get that! If you’ve checked out my website before or have been following me for any amount of time, you probably know that I am all about natural movement and genuine moments, and I don’t do awkward poses or stage moments. So to break the ice, I suggested they shotgun a beer before starting. Don’t worry, we did this at the trailhead parking lot and doused the spillage with water afterward 🙂

I think it worked… just look at these photos! I just adore their natural movements and the way Dewayne looks at Mesha.

We had so much fun taking these photos and I thought it was a sweet way to remember their time living in Carlsbad. We finished the session up with pizza (always a good idea!) and a nighttime shot with some stars in the background. While we were setting up for the last shot, we heard coyotes howling in the distance, something we felt totally lucky for!
